At BDK, Inc., one of our biggest assets is our people. Our teams are comprised of innovators, problem solvers, trailblazers, and leaders with more than a century of combined experience in the IT field. Our motto, “IT Made Simple” directly correlates to our down-to-earth and service-oriented employees who make IT approachable for our customers.
We recently spotlighted our Accounting and Admin Team and how they provide BDK’s current and future customers with the best IT solution recommendations for their businesses. This week, Michael Geleta, Accountant, provides a glimpse into his background, day-to-day accounting responsibilities, and why he recently made the decision to join the BDK team.
- What is your role at BDK?
As an Accountant for BDK, my primary responsibilities include managing customer payments and ensuring bills are not past due. Additionally, I help maintain positive relationships with our customers, and sometimes act as a liaison between them and the IT tech team to provide support and answer questions related to invoices and services provided. It is important to ensure that all invoices and payments are accurately entered into the system to avoid any discrepancies, which is crucial in maintaining financial stability and positive customer relationships at BDK.
- How did you end up in the IT field and ultimately working for BDK
My interest in technology has been a constant throughout my life. I've always had a curiosity about how computers work and even dabbled in cellphone repair in high school. When I went to college, I started pursuing a computer science degree in college and taking programming classes, which further solidified my interest in technology.
However, my path into the IT field took a bit of a detour when I discovered accounting. While computer science involves a lot of math and numbers, I found I enjoyed the logical and explanatory nature of accounting; the streamlined processes and emphasis on making sense of things appealed more to my strengths and interests.
Prior to BDK, I worked as a staff accountant for a local non-profit organization. When I started contemplating my next opportunity, I knew I wanted to work for a place that had a solid team culture and was somewhere I could see myself settling in more long term. When I interviewed with BDK, not only did the fact that they were an IT company interest me, but the interview itself felt very natural.
Work environment is a huge thing for me; you spend 40+ hours a week at your job, so you want to make sure you're comfortable and feel like you fit in. After I interviewed with the team and leadership, I felt confident that BDK checked all the boxes I needed to accept the role.
- Describe your typical day as an Accountant?
My typical day as an Accountant consists of adding any invoices or bills that need to be entered into the system. I also work on a range of special accounting projects provided by our COO; facilitate conversations between customers and our IT techs as needed; help with inventory and accounting for it in our system; and other ad-hoc tasks.
- What do you enjoy most about working for BDK?
Working for a smaller company like BDK, I have the opportunity to build a closer connection to upper management, which is really beneficial from a day-to-day and growth perspective. Also, BDK offers a relaxed atmosphere and comfortable environment, which has provided me with the ability to ramp up more quickly because I feel confident going to whomever I need to ask questions or solve issues.
While I'm just getting started at BDK, I can already tell that I made the right decision joining this organization and am looking forward to building out my future here.
