At BDK, Inc., one of our biggest assets is our people. Our teams are comprised of innovators, problem solvers, trailblazers, and leaders with more than a century of combined experience in the IT field. Our motto, “IT Made Simple” directly correlates to our down-to-earth and service-oriented employees who make IT approachable for our customers.
Our “Day in the Life” blog series highlights some of our organization’s integral contributors, while offering insight into the day-to-day work life and culture at BDK. This week, Maddie Megahan, BDK’s Digital Designer, provides a glimpse into her website design and marketing background, how she ended up in the IT field, and what makes BDK, Inc. a great place to work and grow.
- What is your role at BDK?
As the Digital Designer for BDK, Inc., my main responsibility is to design and develop websites for our customers. My job is to ensure that the websites are modern, user-friendly, secure, and optimized for search engines. Additionally, I provide training for customers on how to use the website and how to make updates. I also handle the monthly maintenance for customer websites, ensuring everything is updated regularly and functions properly.
- How did you end up in the IT field and ultimately working for BDK?
I've always had an interest in technology and the IT field. My mom was a technology teacher for 19 years, so I grew up being exposed to computers, the way they work, and how they are incorporated into the education system.
In college, I had other interests, but always found ways to integrate technology into my class load (e.g., graphic design). Additionally, my internship had me manage blogs and focus on web design, which is where my passion really grew. The women there were incredible mentors, and really helped me grow into the space.
Upon graduating, I worked my way up in the hospitality industry, but ultimately didn't feel like it was the right fit. When the pandemic happened, I started to explore other options and found an open Sales job requisition at BDK. I was immediately impressed by the website, and after interviewing, the management team was more interested in my marketing and design background, and recognized it was something they needed.
I mostly focused on external marketing efforts in my first year, but still helped with website maintenance and design. With the latter being where my interests lied, management has been supportive in helping me grow and foster those skills. I think it’s pretty cool that I've essentially gotten to create my own job in the last 2+ years with the space BDK has provided to really explore what I am passionate about.
- Describe your typical day as a Digital Designer.
As a Digital Designer, my typical day involves working on website builds for multiple customers. I prioritize tasks based on urgency, and my job includes designing individual pages, creating webpages, and ensuring everything works on the front and back end. I also serve as a liaison between BDK and the customer, communicating updates and handling urgent requests. Ad hoc tasks also come up, such as planning and carrying out employee activities to keep morale up, and streamlining processes like onboarding customers and office processes. It's a busy but rewarding job that I enjoy very much!
- What do you enjoy most about working for BDK?
I appreciate how BDK values and respects each and every employee. The management team is always willing to lend a listening ear and provide support in our professional endeavors. BDK also offers a lot of flexibility, which allows us to have space to own our work and be creative. Further, they take time to invest in us as people outside of work, which is something that I really enjoy and makes me proud to be part of the BDK team.
